New River Getaways

West Virginia's Classic Whitewater Rafting Trip in an Easy-to-Plan Package with Lodging and Dining

These easy-to-plan getaway packages include rafting in West Virginia's dramatic New River Gorge. They also include lodging and meals.

The New is the river upon which West Virginia whitewater rafting was built. It's classified as a drop-pool river, which means that at most times of year it has ample opportunities to catch your breath between high-energy thrills. It's also a big-water, high-volume stream, which means it runs every day, all year long. Even when most of the country is under drought conditions, there's no more reliable way to plan to beat the Summer heat!

We run two main sections of "the New," the Upper and the Lower. The Upper New is a ripply splashfest perfect for families with kids as young as 6 years old. Up there the emphasis is on safe, enjoyable fun, with lots of time for swimming and relaxing.

While the Lower New River is more wild. But even there, the character of the river changes with the seasons. In the Springtime, you can expect a class-V, high-octane, adrenaline-fueled ride of epic proportions. Huge, roller-coastery waves are the norm—minimum age 12. In the Summer, things calm down, the pools get calmer and the trip becomes more of a relaxing float punctuated by moments of action in the rapids. From June-October, we raft the Lower New with kids as young as 9 years old.
